Novel technologies for Charged Particle Therapy

ABSTRACT:
Charged Particle Therapy (CPT - the use of protons and other light ions such as carbon) to treat cancer is rapidly being adopted; the number of centres is doubling roughly every 8 years. Recently, a new centre has opened in Pavia.
While present treatment uses cyclotrons and synchrotrons to accelerate the ions, each of these technologies has limitations that newer accelerator technologies might transcend.
In this seminar, I will discuss the requirements for CPT, and describe some of the new technologies that are being studied.
